Michael Praed is well-known for his paintings of the harbours and coves of west Cornwall with their simplified and stylised boats, cliffs and piers. His painting borders on the obsessive: every waking hour, day or night, is an opportunity to be out on the Cornish coast making preparatory sketches or back in the studio working on new material or reworking older pieces. This extends to Michael's travels too - a sketchpad is ever-present in his suitcase. This online exhibition is the first showing of work Michael produced on a trip around America. The scarred landscapes of Death Valley and the Grand Canyon made a particular impression and form the basis for many of the paintings. The visit to Arizona, undertaken a few years ago, reinvigourated Michael's approach to the Cornish landscape and there are clear parallels between these paintings and his more familiar style of work. We are delighted that Michael has made them available to us and that we have the opportunity to present them here.
