John Miller was born in London but his paintings will always be associated with Cornwall, the county where he spent most of his adult life. Elected a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists in 1961, Miller spent many years painting the Cornish landscape. However, it is for his stylised beach scenes, inspired by the view from his studio in Lelant with its views across to Godrevy lighthouse, that he is best known.
Much reproduced as prints, Miller's paintings continued to be extremely collectable after his death in 2002. He remains a great influence on many artists working in Cornwall today while his paintings have become iconic images of the Penwith peninsula. Penwith beach was originally purchased through the New Craftsman Gallery in St Ives.
